Labor - part 1

Hey all! I'm writing to you from my hospital bed at UK... This is almost day 3 of this! My due date came and went on Saturday the 4th. We had our doctors appt on Monday and it was just a regular check up, NST (non-stress test), and an ultrasound. Dr. Mast was going to schedule us to be induced on Wednesday if I made it to our Monday appt. She checked me, still only 1 cm, and said she would call back with a time for us to come to the hospital on Wednesday. Coleman and I did our thing and got our Moe's Monday for lunch before our NST. It's what we always do. It's so delicious and boy in hindsight am I glad I ate that big of a meal!

So we go to our NST at 1 and basically all they do is hook you up to a fetal monitor and check the baby's heart rate and contractions for 20 minutes. Well at some point, I had a contraction for like 3 minutes and his heart rate dropped really low. They kept saying he was having D-cells. After a quick google search I realized they were talking about "decels" as in his heart rate is decelerating. So they said, we're gonna call Dr. Mast and you all need to head on over to the hospital NOW to be induced. They wanted to check my fluid very quickly so they did a quick ultrasound and then we headed on over to UK! Good thing I had the bags packed in the car!

We got all settled in L&D and then the first bit of bad news. They said there might have been some confusion about if you're staying or not. We just want to monitor you for awhile and then we'll decide to admit you. I told Coleman I'm gonna flip this bed over if they don't admit me! Well after about 10 minutes of that, all of the sudden like 5 people rushed in, told me I was having decels, put an oxygen mask on me, and told me I was definitely being admitted from that! So end of that story.

So here Coleman and I have been since Monday evening. They didn't even start my Pitocin until Monday around 10. They decided they wanted to do a Foley ball first. It's basically a catheter but they can stick it in your cervix to help it dilate. They said it won't fall out until you're at least 3-4cm.
So we got pretty good sleep Monday night. The Foley ball came out around 6am which was our only piece of good news yesterday!

They checked me and said I was 3-4cm. 4 was being a little bit generous. So they said they would just keep checking me every 4 hours and see how I was progressing. With the Pitocin, it was making me contract every 2-3 mins, but I couldn't really feel them at all. So that was kinda nice! The nurses and Dr. Mast said maybe you're just one of the freakish women who just can't feel them. Well it got to be around 2pm yesterday, and there was still no change. I was absolutely STARVING at that point. Ladies, once you are in labor, you are not allowed to eat! But still, going 24 hours with no food is no fun! So Dr. Mast and I had a chat, and we went off Pitocin for awhile. Mom and Dad went and got us some food from Fazoli's and I got to eat a good sized meal. Coleman at this point also went to go take the firefighter test. He has applied so please keep that in your prayers. It would work out so well with childcare and everything if he got that job!

After I ate they started me on Pitocin about an hour later around 6pm. We've been basically just chilling and sleeping ever since. They've been checking me, no change from 4cm. When they restarted the Pitocin, I was only contracting every 4-7 mins too. It's been really irregular and I haven't felt them at all.

Around 2am this morning, the doc on call said they were going to try Cytotec. It's a little pill they insert down there to make your cervix soften and ripen. Of course, that didn't work. So around 7 they did another dose. That's been about 2 hours ago and I just started feeling some contractions. I hope this is the catalyst to get this thing going! The docs keep saying how I might be someone they throw everything but the kitchen sink at but my body just doesn't respond to anything.

So here we are. 9am on Wednesday. No baby, feeling some contractions. They said the next step will be to break my water. After that, we're on a clock because once they break your water, you're at risk for infection and other complications. We will try to keep everyone posted, please just text me or Coleman. But it should definitely be sometime today, tonight, or the wee hours of the morning!!!!!
