Mother's Intuition

Very quick update about the past few days. Sunday night it all hit. It was awful. We tried to get Teddy to go to sleep, and every time we would put him in his crib he would cry and cry. We tried feeding, swaddling, holding him until he fell asleep, nothing was working. Finally I just went in his room and let him sleep in my arms the whole night.

So I was like ok, just one rough night. Monday we did the normal routine, and he slept from around 9-11am. After that, he did not sleep ONE BIT, except for maybe like 2 catnaps. I told Coleman I was gonna throw myself off the bridge into the KY River if he didn't get home soon! Teddy would cry and cry, I tried feeding him, holding him, walking around, swaddling, bouncing, EVERYTHING. Nothing was working. I knew it was gas. He burps really well and toots a lot but I know his little belly was hurting him. He also had an EXPLOSIVE poop. It was really big. But he wasn't constipated, it was normal.

When Coleman got home Monday night, he tried everything, trying to give me a break cuz he knew how tired and stressed I was. Coleman was getting frustrated, yelling and carrying on, saying nothing was working. I laid him on the changing table and called my mom. I BAWLED my head off to her cuz I didn't know what to do. He definitely isn't colicky. From my understanding, colicky babies will SCREAM bloody murder, only cry at night, and will clinch their legs up close to their bodies. Teddy didn't do any of that stuff. He would immediately stop crying if I picked him up for like 5 minutes and then he would start crying again. And he would eat like every hour, 2 hours. And this was all day. Sometimes if I picked him up he would burp really loudly so I know he wasn't getting all the gas out. And like I said, he burped and tooted really well after feedings anyways!

So my mom offered to come stay the night with us Monday night. She got here around 11pm. I FINALLY got Teddy to go to sleep around 10:30 so I handed him off to my mom and was like "Good luck!" She had to leave to go to work around 5:30, so I asked her how he did, and she said he slept through the night! He woke up around 4:15. What a little punk. He sleeps for Mamaw but not for me! But I think he was honestly so tired from not sleeping all day that's why he slept so long. My mom said however, she let him sleep next to her in the bed on his stomach. He LOVES sleeping on his stomach.

So Tuesday I was (sort of) rested and ready for him to have a better day. Um no. Not at all. Same thing again. Big poop, still being fussy and really gassy. I decided to call the doctor to make sure nothing else was wrong, plus I think he had a heat rash on his chest and neck.

I took his onesie off and let him just wear a diaper and his rash started immediately looking better. He is a really warm baby. He sweats at night. I asked fellow moms on Facebook and they gave me tons of suggestions. I tried some of them and nothing was still working. However, once I took his onesie off, he slept in the Pack N Play from 1:30-4!!!! So that definitely helped.

Well we went to the doctor. Sorry to all my doctor friends, but please, please PLEASE listen to your patients. I asked him about his rash, and he just immediately dismissed it as eczema. I said, well the last doctor said it was because he was hot. Plus the pictures I looked up online looked just like what Teddy has. He was like no it's just eczema. He didn't even listen to me about his nap and how it was starting to clear up once I took his onesie off.

Then, I asked him about his fussiness and gas, asked if we should change formulas, etc. He immediately dismissed it as colic. And I was like no, it's not colic! I'd been giving him gas drops and they weren't helping very much at all. He said gas drops would only help like 50% of the time (which I agreed with that) and that switching formulas wouldn't help. So basically he said there was nothing I could do. Ok thanks. Glad I waited an hour and a half for you to tell me that.

Well my sorority sister Mary Beth suggested that her son was the exact same way, but switching to sensitive formula made a world of difference. So we went and had dinner with Coleman, and I went to Target to get sensitive formula.

When I got home, I immediately started him on it. It is a MIRACLE worker!!! He slept from 10pm-7am and only woke up once! He woke up a few more times but then went straight back to sleep when I picked him up. So that doesn't count :) BUT today, he's been napping, not gassy at all. No fussiness. NOTHING!!!!!! I am SO HAPPY! I had time to eat lunch, do laundry. It's been great. He even had a normal poop. No constipation!

So anyways, no thanks to the doctor, mother knows best!!!!!
